How Much of a Good Customer Are You?

If you are trying to lose fat, Meg Selig, the author of “Changepower!” suggests that you stay away from the “habit profiteers.”

In her book, she defines the term as the companies, businesses, and people who directly or indirectly benefit from your bad habit.

A habit is something that you regularly do, sometimes without knowing that you’re doing it.

For many people, a habit is like being put on autopilot, and you’re just going through the motions without thinking. The average person will continue to engage in the behavior despite wanting to change.

When it comes to fat loss, some of these habit profiteers include the fast food restaurants with their countless 2-for-1 deals, the cute girl scouts who sell your favorite cookies outside of the mall, the commercials which glamorize overeating, and the movie theaters that allow you to upsize your soda for just $1 more.

Habit profiteers have come out on top for years because they’ve figured out how to get us to purchase their products.

Getting more for your money by buying the large size, and saying that the newest variety has fewer calories when it has an even higher sugar content, are just a few of the things habit profiteers do.

Because we listen without question, we’ve become obedient customers.

So, how do you become lean when you have temptation and bad habits to go up against?

By anticipating which situations are going to trigger you and staying away from them until you have learned to control yourself around them.

Fat gain is not caused by eating high-calorie foods every now and then, but by continuously eating things that are bad for you.

If you are constantly faced with situations where the habit profiteers can get to you, then you’ll find it difficult to change your eating habits.
